I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve stepped into the role of the acting Chief AI Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ???? Read below for why I’m so excited…
As we continue our journey of harnessing the abundance of AI, we’re transforming how we protect and improve public health across America. I’ve had a few months in this role and time to work with leadership to crystalize a vision for the future: empowering CDC staff with cutting-edge AI tools, fostering deeper collaborations with industry leaders, academia, State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial (STLT) and federal partners, and amplifying our impact through innovation.
We’ve already made significant strides (see my previous posts)! Consider that just a few years ago, we launched the first federal-wide Enterprise Generative AI Chatbot available to all CDC employees, and now we have data that indicates saving over $3.5 million with a remarkable 500% return on investment. Our thriving AI Community of Practice has grown to over 2,200 active members, driving groundbreaking projects like rapid Legionella outbreak detection, enhanced foodborne illness tracking, and reduced response times to public health events.
Looking ahead our roadmap is ambitious and impactful. We’ll expand strategic partnerships with top AI industry innovators, accelerating our exploration of emerging technologies like deep research and agentic AI. Through expanded public-private partnerships, we will rapidly deploy innovative AI solutions to enhance disease surveillance, improve operational efficiency, and strategically position CDC as a leader in AI-driven public health advancements. I’m deeply committed to fostering a culture that not only embraces AI but actively leads in its safe and responsible adoption, ensuring CDC continues to remain at the forefront of innovation.
I’m excited to serve under the leadership of Dr Jennifer Layden, CDC director nominee Dr Susan Coller Monarez, and supported by my acting deputy Ben Rogers.
