CivicActions, a leader in open digital services, today announced the launch of the Open Python Directory, a new digital commons project created to consolidate and share open-source Python code developed for the public sector. This initiative empowers government stakeholders, developers, and civic technologists to access, contribute, and collaborate on tools that improve public service delivery, aligning with federal policies such as the SHARE IT Act and open-source adoption guidance. This work builds on CivicActions’ longstanding commitment to openness, also reflected in CivicActions’ Open Requirements Library, which helps agencies plan digital consolidations in a transparent, reusable way.
“The more free and open-source tools that we and likeminded others can provide to the public sector, the better,” said Jonathan Bourland, Associate Director of Drupal at CivicActions. “We created the Open Python Directory to show our commitment to giving back. Part of CivicActions’ mission is to help the government deliver better public services, and our new collection of Python tools is a lofty and logical continuation of that mission.”
Among the inaugural contributions is an artificial intelligence (AI) discovery tool, AI Crawl Analysis, developed by Iris Ibekwe, Associate Director of Front End Development at CivicActions, which leverages AI to analyze and understand large web content structures. This tool is designed to support agencies in planning and preparing digital consolidations, helping teams understand the complexity of their content before moving it.
“My hope is that this tool gives public sector teams a head start on understanding the scope of their web properties. It should also provide faster, evidence-based insights about what content to highlight, merge, or archive, and help create a streamlined information architecture that delivers relevant content right at their audiences’ fingertips,” said Ibekwe. “Ultimately, I want it to transform the labor-intensive process of auditing and consolidating public sector websites into a quicker and more delightful experience for agencies and partners working on consolidation.”
The Directory will continue to grow as CivicActions and its partners openly contribute additional Python-based tools, inviting government teams, vendors, and developers to collaborate and contribute to the repository.
By aligning with federal IT modernization and consolidation priorities, the Open Python Directory offers agencies a credible and practical resource for accelerating digital transformation while strengthening the culture of openness across government.
